Control Room Desk Layout
Joinery reference for the DS-01 Control Room production desk — a single 170 × 80 cm Baltic-birch ply / MDF-core carcass with two integrated 8U rack bays (DS-02), an 88-key pull-out tray (DS-03), a raised monitor bridge (DS-05) and the recessed tilted display well (DS-06/DS-07). Drawings on this page are dimensioned to the contractor package (BOQ DS-01..DS-07 + the LEGO build book DESK section); build to those figures.
Drawing 1 — Top View
Plan GeometryDS-01 carcass 170 × 80 cm — single unit, no return wing
One custom joinery carcass, 170 cm wide × 80 cm deep, dry-set at the Control NORTH wall (VC partition) in the H1r3 local zone 30→200 and facing OW-1. 170 cm is a hard max. End panels are ≤10 cm each so the 150 cm tray aperture holds (170 − 2×10). The desk stands on resilient iso-pads and never touches the wall gypsum.
Owner-supplied equipment on the desk
Shown on the drawings in green so the joiner knows what has to fit. All of it is OWNER-SUPPLIED (see AV Equipment) — not contractor scope, not in the DS-01..DS-07 bands or the budget ladder.
| Equipment | Lands on | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| 2× Genelec 8030C + IsoAcoustics | Desk FRONT edge | Baffle ≈25 cm off the partition, tweeters 120 cm. NEVER on the bridge; never hard on the surface |
| 24–27" MATTE panel | DS-06 well, desk centre | Reclined 40–50°, top edge ≤108 cm. Gloss = rejection |
| Large display | DS-05 bridge | VESA 100/200; offset EAST so OW-1’s west portion stays clear |
| Eye-level display | DS-07 arm / bracket | Clamps to the rear spine rail, NEVER the bridge; never centred on OW-1 |
| Apollo x4 audio interface | Surface, keyboard zone | Desktop unit; keep the mirror zone between monitors and ears clear of tall gear |
| Owner outboard / rack gear | DS-02 8U bays | 16U total across both bays; power lands on the DS-04 loom. Which units land here is NOT yet settled — see the note below |
| 88-key controller (136–146 cm) | DS-03 tray | USB bus-powered — consumes no mains outlet |
| DAW workstation tower | Floor, beside the desk | Full-tower case does NOT fit an 8U bay; knee space stays clear for tray hardware |
Not scheduled anywhere: SSL UF8, SSL UF1 and the Mackie Big Knob Studio+ appear in no equipment schedule and no BOQ line. They are deliberately absent from these drawings; desk centre is occupied by the DS-06 well.
Rack-bay contents are UNRESOLVED. The three equipment sources disagree on where the outboard lives — the headphone amp in particular is placed in VO Live by the equipment BOM and at the host table / VO position by BOQ TB-07, but sits in the Control-room list on AV Equipment. The 16U of bay capacity is real and built; what fills it is a shop-drawing decision pending the equipment reconciliation, and nothing on this page should be read as fixing it.
Drawing 2 — Side Elevation
Ergonomic HeightsSection on the desk centreline
Work surface 72–74 cm finished (DS-01) — this is the datum for everything else on the desk. The DS-06 well reclines 40–50° with its top edge at 95–99 cm (hard cap ≤108). The 88-key tray parks at ≈66 cm, clear of the ≈70.5 cm surface underside. The owner Genelecs and the DS-02 rack bays are drawn dashed — they sit at the flanks, off this section plane.
Drawing 2b — Recessed tilted display well (DS-06 / DS-07)
Owner-adopted dubbing rigTilt band, height cap and the glare keep-out
The lower display sits in a recessed well cut into the desk surface at centre, reclined so the Genelec reflection off the glass is thrown down into the operator zone instead of into the engineer’s ears. Mirror geometry rotates that bounce by 2× the tilt angle, which is why the angle is an acceptance criterion and not a comfort preference.
| Rule | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Tilt | 40–50° recline ONLY. 8–36° is the FORBIDDEN band (bounce lands in the ears). Near-flat ≤7° also rejected — no tilt gives full-panel cloud incidence. ≥38° is fully downward-safe. Measure with a digital angle gauge; do not eyeball it. |
| Panel | 24–27" MATTE (anti-glare) — mandatory regardless of tilt. A gloss panel is a rejection. Panel is OWNER-SUPPLIED. |
| Top edge | 27" panel (33.6 cm tall) lands at 95–99 cm. HARD CAP ≤108 cm — below the OW-1 sill 110 (VO sightline stays open over the well) and 12+ cm below the 120 cm tweeter axis (direct sound never shadowed). |
| Well pit | ≤4 cm below the surface top — any deeper fouls the DS-03 88-key tray envelope (tray top ≈66 vs surface underside ≈70.5). |
| Footprint | 25.7 cm at 40° / 21.6 cm at 50°, ≤28 cm allowance → keyboard zone 80 − 28 = 52 cm (≥50 required). |
| Glare keep-out | NO luminaire face within a ~129 cm plan radius of desk centre. Ceiling mirror band = 0.41–1.79 m out from the partition over a ±50 cm lateral band. EL-05 mounts in the REAR-SOUTH half of the Control ceiling. |
| Upper display (DS-07) | Gas-arm that swings fully aside, OR fixed bracket OFFSET EAST toward D3. NEVER centred on OW-1 (a centred eye-level screen sits in the 110→160 window band and blocks the view into VO). Arm clamps to the DS-01 rear spine rail, never the monitor bridge. |
Drawing 3 — Power & Data Loom (DS-04)
Joinery CoordinationRear spine — loom, feed-throughs and the bay drops
Everything on the desk is strain-relieved into the full-length rear spine: a 6-way isolated-ground strip off the AV-01 spur, two etherCON feed-throughs and one USB pass-through grommet, dropping into the two 8U bays.
| Element | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Cable spine | Full-length spine along the REAR edge of the carcass; every desk run loomed, labelled and strain-relieved into it (DS-01) |
| Outlet strip | 6-way isolated-ground strip fed from the AV-01 spur — AT CAPACITY by design; NO daisy-chained strips, ever (DS-04) |
| Data | 2× etherCON feed-through, counted within the CN-03 wall-plate discipline (DS-04) |
| USB | USB pass-through grommet; labels at BOTH ends to the cable run-schedule IDs (DS-04) |
| Rack bays | 2× 8U in the pedestals; rack gear power lands on the DS-04 loom; ventilation slots at the rear of each bay (DS-02) |
| Chargers | NOT on the desk — the owner battery/charger fleet lives on the EL-06 station on its own AV-01 strip |
| Decoupling | Resilient iso-pads under ALL feet; the desk never touches the wall gypsum (DS-01) |
